“Gold Bottles” and “Four Beams Down” both feature on a new video directed by Mary Catherine Brouder for www.irishcentral.com following the unsuccessful campaign of candidate Haskins for his Dublin constituency in the recent election. Check it out and enjoy the tunes.

Some more older tunes also feature in her documentary “Through Roma Eyes” that features on www.storyful.com.

I thought i’d also give you a way of hearing the two songs on their own… so pull up a chair and check em out..

2010 Lookin’ Back – Moving Forward

This has become an annual thing, commenting on what the year has brought to the table – I guess it is only natural.

So, as per usual, its pretty late (early!) and I have thrown a bunch of this years tunes into a playlist while I write… Something to stir the senses while I *briefly* go over what In The Black Box has gotten up to in 2010.

So lets just throw it all out on the table:

January – Summer: I continued with my usual process of creating short compilations of music every month. What resulted was a collection of individual songs that I feel had come a long way from those early days in 2004 when the then unnamed In The Black Box was taking shape.

Perfect – I love this

Laurent Garnier takes notice of “Zebra” a track I produced in January 2010 and it later features it on his internet radio station Pedrobroadcast.com’s playlist for 3 months.

It was clear that I was producing less work per month but that the quality was no doubt getting better, and the feedback I was receiving from listeners on Soundcloud and elsewhere was suggesting that I was on the right track. So I decided to stop everything! Stop the monthly compilations.. stop releasing new material every week… just stop… take my time… get it right..

So in April 2010 I released In The Black Box Vol.1 and ceased nearly all music activity online. That is not to say I stopped producing music. No since then I have been working on a selection of new tunes that I hope to have ready for your ears by Summer 2011.. It is now not about quantity but quality. As cliché-ed as it may seem, it sort of felt like everything up to the start of 2010 was practice.. and by the time I had finished work on “Mediate” I could hear that things had changed and it was time to stop practising and produce something new and fresh, something I can build on for the future. So that’s what I have been doing.
…. and it is all to come! If you want to hear a little something I have been working on make sure you check out an early version of “Coil” on my podcast Black Box No.57 … but other than that you wont be hearing much till it is all ready.

Black Box on DirtyRadio
I have completed nearly 30 podcasts since the start of the year with dirtyradio.org. I celebrated one year on the air in May and by the time summer came around I was broadcasting for 2 hours live every Sunday. I would like to thank Mike and everyone who has been tuning in and giving me feedback from around the world! Every week I get 100′s of downloads from listeners of every nationality and it really keeps me in good spirits to know that people are enjoying the music I have to play. I will be back on the air in 2011 with #58 full of all the usual shit.

Photography, Art and www.daviddonoghue.com
This year started on a wave of pure happiness after the success of the Visual Arts Society Exhibition in Trinity College where my work was purchased for the University’s Modern Art collection and now hangs proudly in the new Long Room Hub Building on the campus. This made me think harder about my visual work, and since then I have worked hard at developing and practicing not only my photographic work but also digital and video works – encouraging me to set up www.daviddonoghue.com.
I began working on a digital project I have provisionally named “Dynamics” involving audio and visual portraits and landscapes. This work is ongoing, however it has resulted in a growing series of collages that were produced from the latter part of the Summer to the present day. “Beckett Bridge” and “Blackrock Baths” received encouraging praise at the Vis Arts Exhbition 2010 and again at the DUPA (Dublin University Photoraphic Association) Exhibition a week later. There are plans afoot to set up an individual exhibition in Dublin in 2011 – an exciting prospect! Be sure to stay posted here and at www.daviddonoghue.com for any info if it actually happens!

DJ and Live Work
I kicked off 2010 performing and DJing at a mates house party for the new year.. Gigs however took a back seat until late in the summer when I began DJing a few nights at Antidote and other venues. Live work was put on hold while the laptop had a melt down and while I worked on new material, but this was happily replaced with my involvement in Exhibitions and the like throughout the year.

The Future and other crazy concepts
There will of course be plenty of podcasts and photographic work hitting the websites while I also work on the new music and my video/photographic collages. The new…dare i say EP will be a big event of 2011… I can only hope that I will be happy enough with my work to put it out there. Maybe we will have a party?!?

I think I should put a special note on the fact that this is my last year of studying Art History as an undergraduate.. but through all this time I have found my work as a student and as In The Black Box has had some sort of link… and while I have been keen to keep these things separate they will inevitably collide very soon… so I may be letting you in on a few of my ideas pretty soon… big audio visual projects that i have in mind… huge commitments… EVERYTHING MASSIVE!!! But that is for another day.. suffice to say that things will be coming together in very exciting ways.

New Years Resolution – Write more …

Antidote Presents Bugged: Launch Night

You may remember a few months back Antidote hit the Dublin Friday night scene with a massive kick in the groin. Since then they have grown hugely into one of the hottest nights in Dublin with only the best electronic music around.

Well in that time they have been raised a child down in the deep dark corners of the Mezz and he has finally grown to be a ….BUG! That’s right they have stuffed all the best drum and bass, dubstep and grime into his suitcase and he has taken the boat across the river liffey to the bright lights of the Twisted Pepper!

Antidote presents BUGGED!! Will come to you for the first time tomorrow night (Thursday Nov.04) from the BASSment of the Twisted Pepper. Clouds Over Dublin

I often spend time photographing the changes in the clouds near sunset or sunrise. The low sun picks them out nicely and on a windy day they can change amazingly fast, creating interesting patterns and shapes. Since I live on a hill, the back of my house offers quite a nice view over the roof tops and sunsets can offer a real “silver lining” to most days (see what I did there?).

In these dynamics I try to plot the changes in shape of the clouds against one another using various digital blending techniques. At some points the clouds appear like liquid.. while at others the changes in the clouds shape are very clear.. This is just one example of many dynamics I created from this session, the vertical lines mark out the edges of some of the images.

Dun Laoghaire Marina

I took a stroll down to Dun Laoghaire with my camera in hand as I had done many times before, and some of the fruits of my labour were seen on here a few weeks back. Well I finally got around to forming a dynamic of the images I took that day. The Marina in Dun Laoghaire has gradually become one of the most impressive in Ireland over the years. One of the improvements has been the construction of two or three new breakwaters within the main harbour walls to allow for the safe mooring of all the private boats. These breakwaters are slightly less visited than the main piers, and can offer a welcome break from the crowds while at the same time giving you a new perspective on the harbour as a whole. A mesmerising vertical pattern is created as you peer through the forest of masts that sit in the marina. Each one creating a unique rhythm as its lines slap against the wood and metal, forming into a uncoordinated ripple of sound that bounces off the water. On this day the sun was shining relentlessly against the coming Autumn and while there was a brisk wind off the sea the sun kept the hands warm (only in Summer!).

The light bounced off the rippling water as it lapped against the inside of the breakwater. This created an endlessly fluctuating pattern for my camera to catch for a few minutes. In my head now it is these two things that strike me most about that visit to the marina. The sound of the water and the masts.. working in tandem with the reflections off the waters surface, rolling beneath the sea breeze.

Once again the sheer aesthetic confusion created by both the endless masts and the seas dancing patterns lends itself to a more confusing yet stimulating Dynamic.. like that of the Blackrock Baths.

Blackrock Baths

I was down taking some shots of the Baths in Blackrock. I was struck with how it was so run down yet still charming. So charming in fact that the waterfront around it was full of people eating their lunch and watching the waves brush the coast. The area around the entrance to the baths is now covered with a thick layer of sand and shells. The door is found down a small gap between the Bath wall and the dart station. Graffiti lines the walls, so much so that it has become a mess of colour rather than displaying any words or shapes in particular. The steel doors have long since been sealed and even they have succumbed to a new colourful paint job. The Diving tower stands strong at the foot of the baths looking over Dublin bay. Seagulls hang out on the top most railings, while the metal appears to slowly but surely fall apart as its paint is stripped by the seaside weather. The baths, even in such a dilapidated state are fondly seen as the defining feature of Blackrock on the Dublin coastline, its resilient diving platform, soiled from head to toe in bird shit, stands proudly on the seafront watching the tide go in and out while the rest of the world gets a face-lift.

Perhaps it was inevitable that this Dynamic would come across so disorderly and confusing, especially in comparison to the relative cleanliness and modernity of the Becket Bridge.

“What’s Been Happening?” she said…

So, you will notice that I have been mainly only posting my podcasts on the site. This is as much a result of life as it is a cunning plan…

I thought it was about time I updated everyone on what has been happening with In The Black Box and what will be coming up later this year and into the next.

As you know, for the last few months I have pulled back a lot on what I have been releasing music wise. I can assure you that there is a lot of work going on in the background. I have been working hard to produce some of my best work.. with mixed success… but never the less what comes out (when it comes out) will be a true reflection of what In The Black Box is all about and hopefully it will be worth a brief and enjoyable listen (at least!).

You will also notice some significant design changes on the website. I have recently tried to simplify the website and make it easier to understand. This is also designed to reflect the reduction in new content since i know that there will not be as much posted here as per usual. But hopefully it will make it easier for you to find the latest podcasts, and in time the latest new music!

On the topic of podcasts, I am continuing with my podcast series on DirtyRadio and recently passed the 50show mark! I think it is only right to thank Mike and everyone at Dirtyradio.org for giving me the chance to get the show off the ground and allow it to grow like it has! Make sure you tune in on Sunday nights and listen to the latest podcasts on www.intheblackbox.eu and on dirtyradio.org.

I’ve also been working hard on the photography end of things, and you can check out my latest work on www.daviddonoghue.com… the site is under construction in many ways but should be an enjoyable experience at any rate.

Recently I have been DJing on and off at Antidote in the Mezz on Friday nights… we have had some real good nights there and big shout out to the Antidote crew for that opportunity.

Recently you will notice we had a couple of guest posts from our international friends over at Mezzic.com bringing us some music news from across the pond! Big up to John for those posts and hopefully i will find the time to return the second favour soon! ;)

So there is a lot of stuff going on here with In The Black Box. Make sure you follow me on facebook and twitter by clicking on the icons on the right… and keep visiting this site for all the info you need!

Cheers

Dave

Beckett Bridge

I have been working on a few of these recently. The Beckett Bridge is fast becoming the center piece to the Dublin Docklands development. The suspension lines create multiple angles as they intersect in the sky, and there is a sense of perfect harmonious balance as the weight pulls against the great spine that reaches towards the north.

July – Found

I was standing under the trees to shelter from the lightest of rainfall. It was golden sunlight that lit the sheets of floating water, iwas happy to watch it from my green refuge, the light was shining through the leaves behind me and above a drop would fight its way through the foliage every so often wetting my hair. The rain gave a hum that i couldnt hear but could see in the space between me and the furthest point. And in my ears were bullets in conversation, jumping, that was a good moment with mother nature.

She is in headphone heaven. Pill boy pops between swigs, train to the centre. Make it last this time, song never end, make it last or let him wake up in clean clothes and the original brain, nothing like it is now, pill boy to the centre of the earth, the heart.

I would hear the DMC videos and you know it would go from there.. It was never easy in the winter when the snow would freeze over the aerial.. Field dynamics dont underestimate the infnite perspective, rollng steel vectors to the west and digging the natural earth grooves, ys on tour and six bucks a beer, nothing like a sprite and a bud before breakfast, just bring that home in a golden groove… Run alongside, as fast as possible, keep up run along.. Deep grooves, you dont forget that face young to old, there were a lot of young djs in detroit that were just djs, single tree, field dynamic, far out perspective point. Car drain, filterthe movement

Music ripples through no noise, nothng but the reactions that result. And now through the wall the whole world continues and i exist in stasis waiting for the last breaths of this, the longest of days squeeze from out of my weary lungs.. Disk man take me to that higher state of consciousness.

A day when ideas dig deep into the brains of thosd around us. Dont let this one go, dont let it beswallowed up by the wants of futile desires. Ambition breathes life into long years and there will be many to withstand over time. Consider ambition and dont forget that it is always to be done…. Without question

Just waiting till the right time to close up and give in to the needs.smothering him in envy the serpent circles territory afraid of the intentions of its enemies. Yet nobody was here to invade

And we wonder how it will all work out, this new thing,

Dammit give in and dont threaten me behind a smile – you are irrelivant
